 Launch Ceremony of the Confucius Institute at the University of Cyprus

The launch ceremony of the Confucius Institute at the University of Cyprus was solemnly held in Nicosia, Cyprus on 27th October, 2014.The Confucius Institute at the University of Cyprus (CI at UCY)is co-established by Beijing Institute of Education and the University of Cyprus.Before the launch of CI at UCY, Cyprus was the only EU member that did not have a Confucius Institute, now the Confucius Institutes have been established in all EU member countries.
 
In the launch ceremony, the sign of the CI at UCY was officially unveiled by Professor Costa Kadis, Minister of Education and Culture of Cyprus; Mr. Liu Xinsheng, Chinese Ambassador to Cyprus; Professor Constantinos Christofide, Rector of the University of Cyprus; and Mr. Luo Jie, member of Education Work Committee of Beijing Municipal Party Committee, and member of Beijing Municipal Commission of Education. The congratulatory letters from both MadamXu Lin, Director General of Hanban of China, and Professor Li Fang, President of Beijing Institute of Education, were also read out in the ceremony.
 
More than 100 guests attended the launch ceremony, including Professor Marios Mavronicolas, Vice Rector of the University of Cyprus and the Chairman of the Board of the CI at UCY; Professor Joël Bellassen, Inspector General in Chinese Language Teaching at the Ministry of Education of France;Prof.Yang Xiuqin and Professor Dimitrios Kardaras, Co-Directors of the Business Confucius Institute in Athens; Professor Chen Yanfei,Dean of the Faculty of Physical Education and Arts at Beijing Institute of Education; Associate Professor Zhang Jinxiu, Dean of the Faculty of International Language and Culture at Beijing Institute of Education; Associate Professor Wang Zhenxian and Ms. Elena, Co-Directors of the Confucius Institute at the University of Cyprus, as well as Cypriot government officials and diplomatic envoys in Cyprus. Honorable guests from China and other countries extended their warmest congratulations and heartfelt wishes to the establishment of the Confucius Institute at the University of Cyprus.
 
“The Confucius Institute at the University of Cyprus will serve as a bridge facilitating the Sino-Cypriot cultural communication and enhancing the age-old friendship between our two countries and the peoples”, Professor Costas Kadis, Education and Culture Minister of Cyprus, in place of Mr. President of Cyprus who was absent in the ceremony, was quoted as saying.
 
Mr. Liu Xinsheng, Chinese Ambassador to Cyprus, said the founding of Confucius Institute at the University of Cyprus offers a channel for Cypriots to learn Chinese and appreciate Chinese culture, besides it will create more opportunities for bilateral cooperation. Mr. Liu hopes both sides can fully tap into the platform, on which the two countries can strengthen their bilateral relations and bring benefit to peoples.
 
In the speech delivered by Mr. Luo Jie, member of Beijing Municipal Commission of Education, he reiterated that Beijing Municipal Commission of Education will support as ever the in-depth cooperation between Beijing Institute of Education and University of Cyprus, wishing the Confucius Institute at the University of Cyprus to be operated with characteristics, to cultivate excellent talents conducive to the friendly Sino-Cypriot cooperation and add to the beautiful natural scenery of Cyprus with a bright cultural landscape of the Confucius Institute.
 
A rainbow of traditional Chinese artistic performances, given by Professors from Beijing Institute of Education, including recitals, dances, folk songs and arias ensued, culminating the launch ceremony.
 
“The establishment of this Institute means the Confucius Institute has been officially introduced to all EU member countries”, Prof. Wang Zhenxian, Chinese Director of the Confucius Institute at the University of Cyprus, was quoted as responding to the local journalists’ interview. “There are currently 24 registered students studying Chinese in the Confucius Institute. Next year, the Confucius Institute is scheduled to open an assortment of Chinese courses and cultural lectures, set up a Test Centre for HSK, strive to improve Chinese language teaching and spread Chinese cultural knowledge in Cypriot primary and secondary schools.
